"Cannabis and Fibromyalgia"

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.

Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way our brain process the painful and nonpainful signals.

They believe that the repeated nerve stimulation causes the brain and spinal cord of people with fibromyalgia to change. This change involves an abnormal increase in levels of certain chemicals in the brain that signal pain.

In addition, the brain's pain receptors seem to develop a sort of memory of the pain and become sensitized, meaning they can overreact to painful and nonpainful signals.

Fibromyalgia often co-exists with other conditions, such as:
-Irritable bowel syndrome
-Chronic fatigue syndrome
-Migraine and other types of headaches
-Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome
-Temporomandibular joint disorders
-Anxiety
-Depression
-Postural tachycardia syndrome

Results showed that the pain intensity reduced from 9.0 at baseline to 5.0, and 194 patients (81.1%) achieved treatment response. In a further multivariate analysis, spasticity, and previous use of cannabis were associated with treatment outcome. The most common adverse effects were mild and included dizziness (7.9%), dry mouth (6.7%), and gastrointestinal symptoms (5.4%).

Researchers concluded that cannabis appears to be a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of fibromyalgia symptoms.

*The aim of a study, wich published in April, 2011, was to describe the  the associated benefits reported by patients with fibromyalgia who were consumers of Cannabis. In addition, the quality of life of patients who consumed cannabis was compared with patients who were not cannabis users.

28 patients who were cannabis users and 28 non-users were included in the study. After 2 hours of cannabis use, the results showed a statistically significant reduction of pain and stiffness, an enhancement of relaxation and calmness and a feeling of well being. Also they noticed that the mental health was significantly higher in cannabis users than in non-users.

Researchers concluded that the use of cannabis was associated with beneficial effects on some Fibtomyalgia symptoms. Further studies on the usefulness of cannabinoids in patients as well as cannabinoid system involvement in the pathophysiology of this condition are warranted.
