"Cannabis & Bipolar Disorder"

Bipolar disorder
(BD) is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. The types of BD and all of them involve clear changes in mood, energy, and activity levels.

These moods range from periods of extremely “up,” elated, and energized behavior (known as manic episodes) to very sad, “down,” or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes). Less severe manic periods are known as hypomanic episodes.
How Cannabis Can Be an Effective Treatment for Bipolar Disorder...?

Studies supporting the use of medical cannabis for Bipolar Disorder and that can help you manage your symptoms with the right treatment plan, but let's see what the studies say...
-How Medical Cannabis Can Help...

-A 2016 study published in journals.plos.org found that people with bipolar disorder didn’t experience significant mental impairment when using marijuana compared to people with bipolar disorder who didn’t use marijuana.
The study also found that after using marijuana, the patients with bipolar disorder reported better moods.

Critics of marijuana use for bipolar disorder say that it affects a person’s thinking and memory. This study didn’t find that to be true.
-Another study published in 2015 found that marijuana use in some people with bipolar disorder enhanced their mood and promoted a more positive outlook. However, the researchers found that people were more likely to use marijuana when they were already having a good day mood-wise and not when their symptoms were more severe.

Researchers mention that "CBD may be beneficial in alleviating, anxiety, psychosis, and other psychological symptoms and may have a pharmacological profile similar to that of antipsychotic medications, which are often prescribed to patients with bipolar I disorder.

Further, CBD has been shown to be an effective anticonvulsant treatment for those with pediatric seizure disorders, another class of drugs frequently prescribed for mood stabilization in patients with BPD".
-Researchers in a literature review mention that "Bipolar affective disorder is often poorly controlled by prescribed drugs. Cannabis use is common in patients with this disorder and anecdotal reports suggest that some patients take it to alleviate symptoms of both mania and depression".

"This review of cannabis use by patients with bipolar disorder and of the neuropharmacological properties of cannabinoids suggesting possible therapeutic effects in this condition. No systematic studies of cannabinoids in bipolar disorder were found to exist, although some patients claim that cannabis relieves symptoms of mania and depression".
-Also,in a study published in 2014 found that "There was a significant association indicating a dose-response relationship between cannabis use and age at onset of bipolar disorder. There were no interaction effects between cannabis use and presenting polarity or presence of psychosis.
The doses of cannabis used may affect the age at onset of bipolar disorder."

-In another review mentioned that "Cannabinoids like CBD and THC may provide therapeutic applications in bipolar disorder and anecdotal evidence supporting this claim".
The review also concluded that "There are good pharmacological reasons for believing that the prescription of synthetic cannabinoids or standardized plant extracts may have a therapeutic potential in Bipolar Affective Disorder (BAD)".

Resaerchers suggest that "the time is ripe for carefully managed trials of prescribed cannabinoids to determine whether they are of value as adjunctive drugs in bipolar patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by standard medications".
-Summary:
